An Air Admittance Valve (AAV) is a pressure-activated one-way valve used in soil and waste systems. When water flows down a drain, it creates negative pressure (a vacuum). This valve opens to let air in, equalizing the pressure and preventing the “gurgling” sounds or the siphoning of water from nearby traps. Once the pressure is balanced, the valve snaps shut to keep foul smells trapped inside the pipework.
Traditionally, soil stacks had to be vented through the roof of a property.
