A vent cage (also known as a soil pipe cowl or bird guard) is a protective terminal fitted to the top of an external soil vent pipe (SVP). Its primary purpose is to allow sewer gases to escape and air to enter the system—maintaining the necessary atmospheric pressure for toilets to flush correctly—while acting as a physical barrier against external obstructions.
At ECO HEAT SHOP, we recommend installing a 110mm vent terminal on all open-topped soil pipes to avoid costly plumbing emergencies. Without a cage, birds often mistake the warmth of a vent pipe for a nesting spot. A blockage at the top of a stack can lead to “siphoning,” where the vacuum created by a flush pulls water out of your toilet traps, allowing foul odors to enter your home.
